I put my working student on my 16.1hh mare yesterday. She's a little thing but is used to riding 17.3hh Warmbloods in her instructor's barn. She said my mare felt "just the right size." There was a good foot of barrel under the sole of her boot. 8)
When she rode my 14.3hh mare last week, she hit ground a foot sooner than she expected. (Ow.) I remember that feeling well--having come to the breed from Warmbloods, too.
She's totally in love with the breed now. Loves their solidity and power, and gets how they think. Though yesterday's session with the mare we're starting did widen her eyes a little. Mare likes to courbette when she's excited....
Join us as we celebrate the Lipizzan horse in the American Southwest and around the world. Look for posts on the care, feeding, psychology, training, history, and yes, the magic of this rare and unusual breed.
